The Trench Team requested sensational riding for 2019, so here is a tour that more than meets that brief. Superb riding in the 'Super Schwarzwald'. Imagine a land where the roads are like silk, cleaned to perfection; of little villages separated by swathes of forest with fresh minted, oxygenated air to suck in, deliciously hearty and plentiful German dishes to smack your lips over and invariably, smiling locals wherever you go.

The terrain is hilly! The routes are undulating, through a stunning landscape with a serious climb on most days. We ride from the university city of Heidelberg, wandering through the forest to the gracious city of Baden Baden, and on to beautiful Freiburg with a cathedral that is simply jaw-dropping. This is a tour that offers a fascinating, ever-changing landscape for enthusiastic cyclists and a daily challenge to ensure you finish better than when you started.

DAY ONE TUE 6 AUG | WELCOME

We suggest arriving into Heidelberg the day before. Easy train journey from Frankfurt to Heidelberg. Your tour begins in Heidelberg, meeting mid-morning for bike fit and set-up. This will be followed by a light lunch and Tour Briefing. We will take you on a brilliant afternoon's ride to shake out any cobwebs. Welcome to the Schwarzwald!

DAY TWO WED 7 AUG | HEIDELBERG TO PFINZTAL

We promised hilly, and today it's right out of the gate. Climb out of Heidelberg, past the Schloss Heidelberg and into the northern reaches of the Black Forest region. Rolling hills after the heart starter to our hotel in the forest.

Fantastic day with the highlight being the climb of the Teufelsmuhle. Narrow, quiet roads through deep forest. Just beautiful!

DAY FOUR FRI 9 AUG | PFINZTAL TO BADEN BADEN

The ride commences on familiar territory as we retrace yesterday's route with a different perspective all the way to Gaggenau. Turn left for the ascent of the day up to the perfect chess piece tower of Hohloturm, officially the Kaiser Wilhelm Turm. Climb that if you dare!

DAY FIVE SAT 10 AUG | BADEN BADEN REST DAY

You've had a solid first half on tour, so R&R is the order of today. There will be a leisure activity, such as a cruise on the Rhine river, as well as time to relax and explore the lovely city centre.

DAY SIX SUN 11 AUG | BADEN BADEN TO FREUDENSTADT

The Queen stage of the tour. The scenery is spectacular! The riding is spectacular! The massive Platz in Freudenstadt - spectacular!

Incredible ride through the heart of the Black Forest. Idyllic valleys, wooded climbs and steep, fast descents on virtually immaculate roads. We finish in the cuckoo clock town of Triberg, also home to Germany's tallest waterfall. Sehr schon!

DAY EIGHT TUE 13 AUG | TRIBERG TO FREIBURG

If, after yesterday, you thought it couldn't get any better, we're pretty sure we can prove you wrong. The day begins with a gentle climb and then one of the best descents you'll ever do. Seriously! The route, the road quality, the views! And that is all before one of the best gorge rides ever! With a finish into Freiburg, a city with one of the most awesome church spires ever! DAY NINE WED 14 AUG | FREIBURG LOOP TO KAISERSTUHL

Finale day! A tapering ride to ease the pain of leaving this stunning part of the world. We ride through the rolling hills of the photogenic Kaiserstuhl - the real thing, not the wine casks! - vineyards. Delightful village stops, some wine tasting and a fitting celebratory dinner. Not goodbye. Auf Wiedersehen!
